MALARIA tells the story of Fabiano, a young Mercenary who is hired to kill Death.
This short film combines Origami, Kirigami, Time lapse, nankin illustration, Comic Books and Western Cinema.
My first intention was to submit this project to Django Unchained Emerging Artist contest, but 6 months later we finally finished Malaria. We hope you enjoy it!

I’m still kind of amazed at how few people realize the unity/solidarity clap originated here, between Filipin@s and Chican@s.

I’ve heard of it from ASU’s Asian Pacific American Studies professor. He implements it before and after his class lectures. Also another reminder for his upcoming Eastwind Books of Berkeley event this Thursday.

As legend has it, the Filipino-Americans and Mexican-Americans would begin their meetings with a “unity” or “solidarity” clap to bridge the language barrier. The clap would start slow and in unison before speeding up and ending in cheering. (source)

i’ve also heard the unity clap was used to build connection between filipin@-american and mexican-american migrant farm workers as a way to come together even with the language barrier.

additional info, i heard hands started on the chest on the heart, then the clap starting slow and building faster (mimicking a heartbeat), and then going really fast until folks said [someone please correct me with the spelling cause idk] isang bagsak, which meant two things [please correct me again if i’m wrong] “another day done,” and “one fall, all fall”-for solidarity

hopefully ppl don’t forget about the filipin@s or the story of the unity clap. hopefully i did it justice.

here we’ve always called the unity clap the “organizer clap” which doesn’t do the origins much justice.

i’ve also learned that this was a way to get farm workers together as organizers were coming through the fields. one person would place a hand on their heart and get the beat and start clapping to that beat. as more people joined in the clapping got faster because you are building momentum for the movement. then when everyone’s in and you feel the clap inside of you, everyone ends on one clap because now we’re… unified. look at that.

(my commentary is obviously redundant but my organizer heart is fluttery)

the unity clap is also a University of California wide thing in Pilipin@ and POC spaces too. At UCLA we explain the whole history behind it every time.

The phrase is called Isang bagsak and it also means “one down.” Also that phrase’s origin came from the People Power movement in the 1980’s Philippines, particularly from peasant farmers. I feel there’s been some heavy miscommunication with connecting isang bagsak to the UFW movement in the 1960s :/ If someone can help find a citation that would be helpful for it was passed down to me orally.

other than that, long live Chican@ and Pilipin@ solidarity! We have a solidarity commemoration event every year here in SD, 3 years running!
